Description of Rimrock and Little Spearfish Trails

Rim photoThese trails are designed and maintained for hikers, horseback, and mountain biking. The trailhead for the Lower Loop of the Rimrock Trail is located at the Rod and Gun Campground. The trailhead for the Upper Loop of the Rimrock Trail and Little Spearfish Trail is located at the Timon Campground. There are also many access points along both trails to enter the path system.

Both trails meander through stands of Ponderosa pine, quaking aspen, and paper birch. Spectacular views of limestone cliffs are complimented by the ambiance of Little Spearfish Creek.

The Rimrock Trail is bisected into a "Lower" 3.5-mile loop and an "Upper" 4.5-mile loop. The middle trail provides mountain bikers and others a gentler route out of Little Spearfish Canyon.

The foundation of an old Ranger Station and a root cellar can be seen between Timon Campground and the Rod and Gun Campground.

More information on these trails and a trail brochure is available at the Spearfish Ranger District, 2014 North Main, Spearfish, SD ... near the Wal-Mart store.
